JEFFERSON COUNTY

Jefferson County is located in east Tennessee near the North Carolina border. It was established as a county in 1792. Dandridge is the county seat of government. Jefferson City is another important community located in the county. The county was named in honor of Thomas Jefferson.

Jefferson was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and later President of the United States. He served in a number of other capacities throughout his career, including Vice-President, Secretary of State and Governor of Virginia.

Douglas Lake, covering a large part of eastern Jefferson County provides nearly unlimited recreational opportunities as does Cherokee Lake in the northwest part of the county. Only a small part of Cherokee Lake is located in the county but access is available to the entire lake.

Jefferson County was formed from lands that earlier had been parts of Greene and Hawkins Counties.
